Insects and arachnids, such as mosquitoes and ticks, are responsible for a multitude of diseases including malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, and more. These diseases impact hundreds of millions of people annually, causing illness, disability, and death. Invasive pests are also responsible for major agriculture losses, destroying 30 – 40% of crops each year. Crop losses due to pests contribute to $1.5 – 2 trillion in annual agriculture losses as well as famine in many parts of the world.
VectorFree has found a solution in the form of their novel insect repellent that provides long-lasting mosquito protection. The company’s products create a barrier that reduces mosquitoes’ biting behavior for extended periods of time. The approach uses controlled release to extend protection, without resorting to synthetic chemicals or harmful surfactants. VectorFree’s goal is to protect both people and crops from harmful diseases, insects, and agricultural pests, and the company believes that safety should not come at the expense of human or environmental health.
The company was founded in 2025 by UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) Professor Craig Montell and UCSB PhD candidate David Aguilar, who is now VectorFree’s CEO. It has completed laboratory and field tests that demonstrate its formula’s superior efficacy compared to traditional insect repellents. The repellent is biodegradable and minimizes skin absorption, making it safe for long-term use. Additionally, the formula has a light texture, pleasant aroma, and is safe for clothing, and gear.
VectorFree is committed to partnering with agricultural experts and industry leaders and is currently seeking partners, investors, and collaborators, as it continues to develop sustainable, long-lasting alternatives to traditional pesticides.
