BrainE Labs is a technology company with the mission to improve the quality of life for people with walking disabilities, starting with the Cadense Shoe, the world’s first variable friction shoe. The Cadense Shoe addresses swing phase disabilities associated with stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, brain tumor, peripheral neuropathy, and general weakness due to old age by exhibiting a low friction outsole when the foot moves and high friction outsole when the foot stands. A pilot study published in 2019 in collaboration with Cottage Health Research Institute and approved by the Cottage Health Institutional Review Board revealed a 23-47% increase in speed for 3 of 5 participants with neurological disease or injury, while improving the quality of gait by reducing unhealthy hip circumduction by 41-66%. Since 2019, BrainE labs has transitioned the Cadense shoe from a laboratory study into a mass-manufacturable product, ready for sales in late 2022.
