Over the last six years, billions of purple sea urchins have destroyed hundreds of miles of California kelp habitat. These urchins are starving and contain little to no uni, which is a seafood delicacy with an estimated $1.2 billion market value. Aristotle’s Lantern is creating urchin ranching solutions to remove, fatten and sell urchins to meet increasing demand while simultaneously restoring balance to kelp habitats. Using our feedstock, hardware, and process we can address both the “boom” and “bust” cycles that occur in various urchin and kelp habitats, including those in California and Maine.
